Labor day in Chicago, IL

I spent Labor day weekend in good company in Chicago, IL. Among other things, we spent some time at the Chicago Jazz Festival, which was classy, and went to a seedy blues joint, which was raunchy. A Startrail Photo

Final post from this Colorado trip, promise. I’ve wanted to take a startrail photo for quite a while, and this trip I finally dragged a tripod along on our hike and got on it. Unfortunately, when we were backpacking we only got one night of clear skies, and there wasn’t really a spectacular view. But hey, the next one I take will be in a nicer view, and I’ll let it run longer. Here’s the final photo (click on it for a larger version):

I put the camera on a tripod, set it for 30-second exposures at f/3.5 (ISO 800), set it on continuous shooting mode, and locked the remote control. I left the camera for 105 frames, or about 53 minutes. I then put all the photos together on my computer using this neat Startrails program by Achim Schaller.

Fourth of July in Silverton, CO

I happen to have spent Fourth of July in the charming town of Silverton, CO (population 531 or 50, depending on who you ask), camping by a very cold river, which I nevertheless swam in. It was a blast.

The gunfighter club fired their guns happily and often, and these two really didn’t appreciate it.

San Francisco, part deux

In a recurring experience or dream or journey or illusion, I woke up in San Francisco again one morning. It was rather nice, this time including the weather. I got to see Alcatraz and Marin county before I once again woke up down in Riverside. Life’s all about journeys, isn’t it?

Oregon and Norcal

I recently took a trip up to Oregon and Norcal; here are the pictures. We visited the Trinity Alps, Crater Lake National Park, then drove down most of the Oregon coast. A final few days we spent in Redwoods State Park up in Norcal and a few days in Point Lobos. Here are some pictures, hope you like them.

You wake up at LAX. Pacific. You wake up at O’hare. Pacific, mountain, central. Eastern? Lose an hour, gain an hour. Central. You walk around and take some pictures and then drive drive drive away. Lose an hour, gain an hour. If you wake up at a different time, in a different place, could you wake up as a different person?

Bergama

Meet Assa, who finds a place for us, get dinner with him, bet four Lira on Fenerbahce beating Besiktas 3-1, lose those four Lira (they won 2-0, it was a great game), night. Pergamom, Red Basilica, Asclepium, shuttle to otogar, buy tickets to Çanakkale, shuttle back because the bus doesn’t leave for another three hours or something, internet café, shuttle to otogar, bus to Çanakkale.

Sleep. Gallipoli tour, forget camera at restaurant, get it in the evening, long chat with the 55ish year old aussie couple (horses, traveling, war, his stories – arrested in Burma, Maharaja’s palace, smuggling stuff Germany to Pakistan..), night. Troy tour, bus to Istanbul.
